one thing i enjoyed the most is experiencing the tension between to groups. by saying that i don’t mean i enjoy wars. i’m just talking about tensions that are equated to fun. one example is the rivalry between ateneo de manila and de la salle university. if you are from this country, i’m sure you are perfectly aware of this.
whenever there is a basketball game between this two schools, expect that all tickets are sold out. there are hoarders who line up early morning in the ticket outlet and sell them at 3 to 4 times the original price. surprisingly, people still buy them. including me. yes, i know some brows are raising now. who would want to miss those games? i’ve been watching uaap basketball games eversince i was in 4th grade due to the influence of my lasallian cousins. anyway, when it’s not the hoarders who crowd the lines of the ticket outlets, the maids or drivers of the alumni bear the heat of the craze.
i don’t remember exactly the story of how the rivalry started. they said that it begun from basketball also way back in the 70’s when a game resulted to commotion, thus, violence ensued. that event must have stuck in the minds of the ateneans and the lasallians because until now, classes are called off whenever these two groups face each other in the basketball court. their games beat the championship games in terms of ticket sales and filling of all the seats in the venue. imagine what it’s like if the two fight for the championship slot. there is pandemonium! you’ll see some of the higher ups of the governement, entertainers and some important people from other aspects of the society cheering for their own team. all you’ll see are two colors only. blue polo shirts and green polo shirts. one thing i noticed, they all wore khaki pants or shorts and the shirts are always lacoste. LOL! the cheers are always the same. from time immemorial to now, you always hear the same rah rah and the same shouts. you will hear the same jokes and it goes on and on and on. sports bar are filled by those who don’t want to shove themselves in the crowd. bickering can be heard from one group to another as every shot fill the goals. to those who are not in either of those places, eyes are fixed in the television at home.
in the end, one group goes home defeated and the other one a winner but both expecting to see each other again in the next season. the funniest thing about this is that apart from basketball, there are no other subjects that they have to compete. while ateneo is good in liberal arts, la salle excels in business.

Oh yes.
Dati, lagi ako nanonood nyan sa araneta. pero parang nahahati ang katawan ko.
that time, gf ko is from ateneo.
and ako naman pro-lasalle.
Kaya minsan ang away basketball, nadadala hanggang sa loob ng sasakyan.
Pero okay lang, panalo naman kami e.
hehe
ako naman berdeng berde. pero ganyan din feeling ng ibang friends ko who went to ateneo for high school and la salle for college or vice versa. when they watch the game, they just literally watch. don’t cheer, don’t react.
thats cute… my husband and his best friend support opposite soccor teams. They constantly give each other grief and text each other with poor scores and ha ha’s. Its all done in fun…
